Oil Pump
I will be running a 30mm Shadek oil pump in my Type4. This is actually a Type1 pump so wil need some mods to get it to work in a Type4 application.

I'll be using a Webcam camshaft, Scat Aluminum cam gear and a Shadek 30mm Type1 oil pump with a full flow cover. This combnation requires some machine work to get it all to fit. The above picture shows that in standard form, the oil pump can't sit flush in the case, sitting proud by about 1.9mm. This is resolved by machining off 2mm (0.090') from the back of the pump.

Here is the back of the oil pump machined down, it is the upper boss that is modified. Note that the oil pump outlet has been drilled and tapped for an 1/8th plug, this is blocked off to re-route the oil out of the case and into the external pipework for the full flow setup.

Here's a shot of the inside showing the blocked off exit from the pump, this will force the oil out of the passage on the full flow oil pump cover. The corresponding hole on the case is also drilled and tapped to prevent oil trying to force it's way back down from the other side and causing a leak at pump/case seal. n.b. Illustration to follow.

With the back of the pump machined down, the pump can now sit flush in the case. This modification also allows a sufficient gap between the oil pump housing and the camshaft face.

However, with the cam gear and bolts in place it is clear that the cam bolts and the oil pump housng will interfere. The bolts supplied by Web Cam have already been faced to reduce their height... but... the cam bolts will still need to be recessed into the cam gear for more clearance. The recesses should be 0.040'.

When the pump is sitting flush in the case, the upper cam gear will still protrude by 3mm. This is remedied by pressing the shaft into the gear until it is almost flush with the outer surface.

Modified cam gear with recesses machined for cam bolts.

Strange oil pump problem. It wasn't manufactured correctly, one of the mounting holes is too small and needs drilling out. As it is, the oil pump won't fit onto the M8 studs on the case. Easily fixed on a drill press though.

Pump fitted in case, paper gaskets are omitted and instead Loctite 518 is used.

With gear pressed onto shaft the gear now sits flush.

Oil Pump packed with Vaseline to help with priming.

CSP Full Flow cover fitted. Loctite 518 is again used to create an oil tight seal.
